Why such a strange phrase as "Happy as a clam" Actually, it all makes sense when you hear the original saying, "happy as a clam at high tide". At high tide, no human predators will be digging for them. The clams that we harvest locally in British Columbia are mostly immigrants. Manila clams were imported and naturalized to our shores in the 1930s. We also harvest Butter clams (Saxidomus giganteus), Littleneck clams (Protothaca staminea), Geoduck and Varnish Clams.
