I had never heard such an expression but it didn't take a dictionary of idioms to understand the harsh reality behind it: the mother had mouths to feed! All members of the household were required to be industrious. She wasn't keeping the kids "for their breath", or for her amusement. She had work to do!


'Life  should  NOT  be a journey to the grave with  the intention of  arriving  safely in an  attractive and well preserved  body, but  rather  to skid in sideways -  Chardonnay in one  hand - chocolate  in  the other - body thoroughly used up,   totally worn out and   screaming 'WOO   HOO, What a  Ride'
